How cells are studied? Robert Hooke (1635-1703) an English scientist, first observed cells in very thin piece of cork under his crude microscope. Even though he saw some very tiny spaces in the cork and called them "cells", Hooke did not know that nearly all living things are composed of cells. The discovery and early study of cells progressed with invention and improvement of microscopes in the seventeenth century. Two German biologists, Mattias Schleiden and Theodo Schwann, are credited with making first complete statements about the structure and function of cells in the year 1839. The observations of other nineteenth century scientists also contributed to the cell theory. Microscopes of various types are still indispensable tools in the study of cells. |
