Golgi Bodies: Wrapped for shipment
|
Structure: The golgi bodies (also known as golgi apparatus) consists of flattened membranous sacs, stacked like pita bread. Each Golgi stack is called a dictyosome, and the Golgi apparatus actually consists of all of the cell's dictyosomes combined. Function: Golgi bodies store and package proteins which the cell exports. Protein produced and delivered by the assembly-line operation (by ribosomes and ER) , comes to the Golgi body and collects in its hollow sacks. When protein is to be shipped out - or perhaps even when needed inside the cell- bits of the Golgi body break off and the protein, neatly packaged, goes off to the needed site. |
